High Camp Flasks: A Camp Hooch Upgrade

Looking to upgrade your current camping setup? Or maybe you’re on a quest for that hidden gem of a gift for the outdoorsy craft spirit type in your life? Meet High Camp Flasks. High Camp Flasks offers a unique way to solve your camp drink dilemmas with their lineup of outdoor flasks, and these aren’t just any old flask…

Camp Life Challenges

Packing for an upcoming camping trip can be a bit overwhelming. You have to consider all the activities, the weather, and still make sure you’ve got the basics. Nothing sucks more than realizing you forgot an essential item, even though you checked, and re-checked your packing list.

Ironically, you know what you never forget? Alcohol. Yeah, I said it. Whether it be your favorite bottle of whisky or that latest bottle of cab you bought–just because the bottle had a cool label–the booze always gets packed. By the way, let’s be honest, who can figure out a good bottle of wine by just looking at the label. Stop lying, you can’t and I can’t either. Funny labels matter!

Outdoor Tough

It seems all our camping gear is built to be beaten up. It’s durable, it’s waterproof and it is constantly tossed into our rigs and dropped at trailheads. To be honest, it’s part of what I love about the outdoors, it’s just not as soft as the rest of our lives. Our phones can’t be dropped, our cars can’t get a scratch on the paint and our egos–well, you get the drift.

Now, picture tossing your pack down at the campsite just to hear a glass breaking sound and watching that sweet, sweet hooch flood out of the seems. To make matters worse, you just ruined that great label that sold you the bottle in the first place! You’re not winning at this point, and neither is the rest of your trip. Try explaining to the park ranger how you are NOT drunk even though every piece of clothing you have wreaks of booze.

Also, depending on where you live or what climate you are adventuring in, bottle and plastic containers get HOT. I don’t know about you but, sipping a flaming hot drink in the summer doesn’t sound fun.

High Camp Flasks changes all of that (well, not your ego).

Who Needs a Flask Anyways?

You do, its 2020, and we need to capitalize on all this wonderful innovation.

While the idea of a traditional flask is not new, it’s been lacking in a few areas, (mainly volume)  that has yet to be resolved. That is, until now. Sure, you could grab the old school hip flask to enjoy a swig of whiskey at the end of en epic day on the trails, but it ends there. Don’t expect to “toss a couple back” with friends around the campfire with a hip flask, it just lacks the volume you need to have more than a few sips.

Also, when I think of a hip flask, I think of an alcoholic cowboy taking his last swig as he bleeds out in the 1800’s Arizona desert, surrounded by rattlesnakes. I want no part of any kind of snake.

Maybe that was a bit much, but you get the idea. On the other hand, when I think about a High Camp Flasks, I think about campfires, black diamond trails, and good times with friends, sharing a couple of drinks.

Meet High Camp Flasks

Designed by two engineers out of Northern California’s Bay Area, co-owners Nicholas Barisone and Whit Gautreaux created High Camp Flasks. Both Nic and Whit were able to combine their affection for outdoor adventures with innovative designs to create the High Camp Flasks brand.

I recently received an order from High Camp Flasks, specifically the Borealis 375ml (that’s half a bottle of Jack for those who share my inability to do math beyond 6th grade).

Upon opening the box, the Firelight 375ml Borealis Edition is finished in a sleek Gunmetal-Tone that overall gives the appearance of a Clint Eastwood era .357 Magnum. The Firelight Borealis 375ml can also be had in available finishes of copper and stainless steel. Additionally, these flasks can also be purchased in optional 750ml sizes that will carry a full bottle along with some well-designed accessories.

Aside from the sleek aesthetics, what puts this flask at another level is the magnetic cap, or I suppose I should say the magnetic tumbler that secures the top of the flask but also doubles as the lid. Closing the magnetic tumbler is a very satisfying process and I smile a bit each time I close it.

The High Camp Flask is tightly secured internally with a magnetic screw styled “cork” and a rubber seal, ensuring nothing seeps out.

High Camp Flasks Meets the Tetons

After receiving our Firelight 375 from High Camp Flasks, we tossed it into our gear for a 10 day trip to the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. Our trips have a consistent them: lots of planning and preparation, followed by chaos, lack of any organization, and all the plans changing shortly after arrival. But hey, that’s what makes it an adventure, right?

Once we arrived at GTNP, we quickly realized we should have reserved a campsite. Everything was booked and people were driving all over trying to find a spot. I’ve been in this mess before, and rather than hunting camp spots like others, I decided to head to dispersed campsites in the National Forrest area adjacent to the park.

Fortunately, just 5 miles east, tucked in the foothills, we found an incredible lakeside forest service spot. Life is good.

If you want to check out the Tetons and Yellowstone without fighting for a spot, check out this guide on the Best Time to Visit Yellowstone.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better way to celebrate an 8-hour drive from Colorado to North Western Wyoming than with a campfire and a glass of wine. Due to the ongoing wildfires, instead of a campfire, we settled with just lakeside wine right at sunset. Again, life is good.

Incorporating a drink along with good times, good people, and good experiences just seem natural to me. Gone are the days of tossing a glass bottle into my pack. High Camp Flasks really came to the campfire correct with this little ingenious idea.
